A yellow baby blanket

Er is alweer een jaar voorbij, ongelofelijk! Het afgelopen jaar zat voor mij vol ups en downs, en één hele fijne gebeurtenis: de geboorte van mijn tweede dochter :-) Door dat alles zat ik in een soort van creatieve “writer's block”, maar gelukkig word ik weer een beetje mezelf. En hopelijk komt het bloggen ook weer terug!

Ik ben al een paar maanden bezig met de kleur geel, en ik wilde dan ook graag een geel babydekentje. Ik heb het gebreid in Phildar Partner n.6, kleur “miel/honing”, gevonden op Marktplaats :-) Het patroon komt uit een van mijn jaren '70 breiboeken.

It's been a while... 2013 was a year full of ups and downs, and one very happy event: the birth of my second daughter! I hope my creative rut/writer's block is over now, so I can go back to blogging. I'm into yellow these days, so that's why I made her this blanket. The pattern is taken from one of my seventies knitting books.

Lucky stars

I wish you all the best for 2013! These “lucky stars” were quite difficult to knit, but I think the end result is lovely :-). The pattern is called Stjärna, from Karolina Eckerdal, and you can download it for free on Ravelry here.

Zinnia pink socks finished

Finally, I managed to knit a pair of socks of (more or less) the same size:-). Here I am, wearing them on an Autumn walk, during a "hot chocolate + cake" picnic. The shade of pink reminds me of the last Zinnia's from my garden, which I picked a few weeks ago.

Socks & gloves

 

 

I finished my first pair of socks, but one is bigger than the other … hmmm, time to knit a third one :-). In the meantime, I've put these stockings on my to do list. They're from Ariadne magazine, April 1975 . And I'm also thinking about these lovely gloves. The pattern is from the Handbook of Wool Knitting and Crochet (1918), downloable for free here.

Mijn eerste paar sokken is af, maar … de ene sok is groter dan de andere... Tijd om een derde te breien dus :-) Ik vind deze kousen uit Ariadne, april 1975, ook prachtig. En deze handschoenen zien er ook geweldig uit. Je kunt het patroon gratis on-line vinden in het Handbook of Wool Knitting and Crochet (1918).

Back in business

I haven't been posting much, because I have a new job :-). Since I have a 2 hour commute, I started knitting socks on the train. In the meantime, I also finished the silk & wool throw I started this summer (pattern: Lana Grossa Evento). It measures 200 * 150 cm and it's perfect for early autumn days. I don't know how often I will post the next few months, but I hope to keep you updated:-)

Ik heb weinig geschreven de afgelopen tijd, omdat ik een nieuwe baan heb :-) Omdat ik veel moet reizen, ben ik maar sokken gaan breien in de trein. Inmiddels heb ik ook de sprei af, waar ik van de zomer aan begonnen was (patroon: Lana Grossa Evento). Hij is 200*150 cm en perfect voor het begin van de herfst. Ik weet niet hoe regelmatig ik de komende maanden zal bloggen, maar hopelijk wel af en toe!

A summer break

It's time for a summer break :-). I'll be back by mid August, and I hope you will all have a wonderful, lazy summer!

Ps: I used PicMonkey to apply the seventies style filter to the image above. This is a free, on-line photo-editing program. It's very easy to use (no registration required) and it's got some nice tools, such as filters, borders, text, and collages.

Tijd voor een zomerstop :-). Ik hoop dat jullie allemaal een fijne, luie zomer hebben, en ik zie jullie half augustus weer!

Ps: Ik heb PicMonkey gebruikt voor het seventies effect in de foto hierboven. Dit is een gratis, on-line fotoprogramma. Het is erg simpel in gebruik, je hoeft je niet te registreren en je kunt er leuke dingen mee doen, zoals het toevoegen van randen, filters, collages, en tekst.

Knit a neuron @ Dol op Wol, Deventer

Yes, “knit a neuron' :-). On the 13th and 14th of july, the Kopfestival will take place in Deventer. This festival is all about the human brain, and combines science, culture and … knitting. In one of the workshops, scientists will talk about the brain while the participants will be knitting neurons. Artists will then put all those knitted neurons together to make a giant model of the brain. This really made smile :-). Craft store Dol op Wol hosts a series of knitting evenings where you can (learn how to) knit some neurons in advance.

This knitting project was inspired by a similar British event. You can find the knitting patterns in English here.These are some of the neurons we knitted during the first evening :-)

Op 13 en 14 juli vindt in Deventer het Kopfestival plaats. Dit evenement kijkt naar het menselijk brein vanuit verschillende perspectieven: wetenschap, kunst en …. breien :-) In één van de workshops zullen wetenschappers over het brein vertellen, terwijl de deelnemers neuronen breien. Na afloop maken kunstenaars van de neuronen een schaalmodel van het brein. Ik vind dit echt een heel leuk en grappig idee!  

Dol op Wol organiseert een aantal breicafé's waarin je kunt leren hoe je de neuronen breit of gewoon langs kunt komen om mee te doen. Ik was vorige week bij het eerste breicafé en het was erg gezellig. Op de foto zie je een paar van de neuronen die we hebben gebreid :-). De volgende breicafé's zijn op 28 juni en 5 juli. Je kunt de patronen hier downloaden. 

Dit breiproject is trouwens gebaseeerd op een soortgelijk Engels project dat vorig jaar plaatsvond.

Hip & Handgemaakt, II

Last Sunday, I visited the craft fair, “Hip en Handgemaakt”. It was lovely, and really inspiring! I bought a white alpaca scarf from Lulay, who also sells lovely yarn in her web shop. I also loved Marutska's crocheted woolen throws.

In the mean time, I also added some rows to my knitted throw. That's why I took a picture of both my new scarf and my throw.

Afgelopen zondag was ik naar “Hip en Handgemaakt” in Deventer. Het was erg leuk en ik heb veel moois gezien: lintjes, stof, tassen, sieraden, kleding, kussens …. Uiteindelijk heb ik bij Lulay een witte alpaca-sjaal met grof geweven motief gekocht. Haar kraam (en webshop) met verschillende soorten prachtige garens sprak me enorm aan. Verder vond ik de gehaakte wollen spreien en kussens van Marutska ook erg mooi.

Inmiddels ben ik weer een eindje verder met de plaid die ik aan het breien ben, vandaar dat ik mijn nieuwe sjaal en mijn plaid samen op de foto heb gezet :-)

Project management

While I was finishing my leaf & lace throw (see previous post), I was thinking about what I was going to do next. I decided to work with some yarn from my stash. Remember I found some beautiful yarn in the thriftstore a couple of months ago? In addition to the purple balls, there were 16 balls of cappuccino coloured silk/wool blend. The yarn is absolutely divine, but it doesn't suit my skinetone, so instead of knitting a vest, I decided to make one more lace throw :-). I used a pattern from Filati HomeMagazine, issue 46. (picture here). It's knitted with a circular needle size 4. You can find similar (free) lace designs in the Drops pattern library.This is a snapshot I took while I was knitting in the garden. It looks a bit like an under water scene, but in reality, I was sitting under a cherry tree :-)

Het is altijd leuk om nieuwe handwerkprojecten te bedenken. Ik had nog een prachtige voorraad capuccino-kleurig wol/zijde breigaren (in de kringloopwinkel gevonden!). De kleur staat me absoluut niet, dus ik brei geen vest of sjaal, maar nog een leuke plaid. Het patroon is van Filati HomeMagazine, nummer 46. (foto hier). Het wordt gebreid op een rondbreinaald nr 4. Je kunt soortgelijke (gratis) kantpatronen vinden in de DropsBibliotheek. Deze foto heb ik gemaakt toen ik in de tuin aan het breien was. Het lijkt wel onder water, maar het was onder de kersenboom :-).

Leaf & lace throw finished

My leaf & lace throw is finished! I'm happy with the way it turned out but … I must confess that I've had a bit enough of this design for now.... I'll just put it in the wardrobe and take it out when the weather is colder :-)

Mijn gebreide sprei is af! Ik ben er blij mee, en ik heb voorlopig ook even genoeg van dit ontwerp. Hij gaat nu de kast in, en ik haal hem weer tevoorschijn als het koud is :-)

A scalloped crochet border

This is a close-up of the border of the leaf & lace throw I'm working on right now. Only 3 meters of crocheting to go, and then it's finished :-). I did one row of single crochets and two rows of double crochets. I made the scalloped border like this

In the corners, I did 8 double crochets in one stitch, instead of five.

Dit is een close-up van de rand die ik om mijn sprei aan het haken ben. Nog drie meter te gaan en dan is 'ie af:-). Ik heb eerst een toer vasten gehaakt, daarna twee toeren stokjes en toen een toer golfjes volgens dit patroon:

Nine leaf & lace squares

Nine squares finished, and all I have to do now is sew them together and think about some type of crocheted border :-).

Lately, I'm seeing this type of leaf & lace pattern a lot in sweaters and vests. It's not something I would wear myself, but it's definitely an interesting trend. Drops has two free patterns for sweaters with a leaf&lace back, here and here. Noa Noa has a similar sweater in their Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Ik heb alle negen blokken af, en hoef ze nu alleen nog maar aan elkaar te naaien. En natuurlijk nadenken over wat voor soort gehaakte rand ik zou willen maken :-) Ik zie de laatste tijd veel van dit soort patronen in vesten en truien. Het is niet iets dat ik zelf zou dragen, maar ik vind het wel leuk om te zien. Drops heeft twee gratis patronen voor truien met een bladmotief op de rug (hier en hier). En NoaNoa heeft een trui met blad in de Lente/Zomer 2012-collectie.

Drops shawl finished

This is me wearing the Drops shawl I just finished. It's perfect for sunny and cold March days! I tried two things I had never done before: blocking and knitting on a circular needle.

This shawl is knitted on a circular needle, because of the large number of stitches. You start with 7 stitches and end with ca 450. It may sound strange to use circular needles for a piece like this, but this Drops video shows that it is really straightforward.

And second, I had never tried blocking a piece of knitting before, because it seems a lot of work for something that may not be necessary. But it's really worth it. When the shawl was finished, it looked really frumpy and small. Washing it in lukewarm water and stretching it out flat to dry made all the difference!

Dit ben ik met mijn Drops sjaal :-) Ik heb twee nieuwe dingen geleerd van dit project. Het eerste is “blocking”, en ik weet eigenlijk niet hoe dat in het Nederlands heet... Het gaat erom dat je een breiwerk eerst wast (lauwe handwas), en dan plat en opgespeld laat drogen, zodat het een mooie vorm krijgt. Het leek mij altijd een enorm gedoe, maar het hielp echt. Toen ik de sjaal net had afgekant, was het een grote prop. Door het wassen en drogen kwam het model er goed in.

Het andere dat ik heb geleerd, was “heen en weer” breien op een rondbreinaald. Je begint dit patroon met 7 steken en eindigt met ongeveer 450. Omdat zoveel steken niet meer op een gewone naald passen, wordt dit model op een rondbreinaald gebreid. Ik kon me er eerst niet zoveel bij voorstellen, maar deze Drops video laat heel duidelijk zien hoe het werkt.

Knitting & deadlines

Knitting is a great way to relax and to give my mind time to think. I've got two papers to finish before next Thursday, and every now and then between writing, I take a knitting break :-). I'm working on a Drops scarf in wool/silk blend (found in the thriftstore, wow!) and I'll write more about it when my deadlines are finished …

Breien is een geweldige manier om je gedachten even te laten gaan. Ik moet voor volgende week donderdag twee artikelen opsturen, en ik wissel het schrijven af met brei-pauzes. Ik ben inmiddels begonnen met een Drops sjaal in een wol/zijde mengsel (gevonden in de krinloop, niet te geloven!). Als het weer wat rustiger is, schrijf ik er meer over. Komende zaterdag, 25 februari, is er trouwens weer een breidag bij 'Het Kleinvak' in Schalkhaar (Oerdijk 80). Je bent tussen 11:00 en 16:00 welkom met je brei- en/of haakwerk!

Work in progress: six blocks finished

It was a beautiful frosty February day, what a great reason to take my knitted throw outside :-) By now, I've finished 6 blocks. The final throw will be 9 blocks, which is about 150*150 cm. As you can see, it's quite fluffy, and the blocks are not exactly squares. This makes me think about the type of border I wil make, probably a plain row of crocheted stitches...

Het was vandaag een prachtige dag, dus ik had echt zin om in het bos een foto te maken :-) Ik heb nu zes blokken af, dus nog drie te gaan. De definitieve sprei zal dan ongeveer 150*150 zijn. Het breiwerk is behoorlijk “fluffy” en de blokken zijn niet echt vierkant, dus ik denk dat ik er een rand omheen ga haken die die boel wat bij elkaar houdt. Waarschijnlijk gewoon een of twee rijen vaste haaksteken...

Christmas knitting: final post

The Christmas Fair in the Lebuinus Church was wonderful. It was a sunny day, light was streaming in through the high windows, the air smelled of waffles, there were a lot of stalls selling food and hand-made products, there was music, people were interested in our knitting... It was great to be part of it! I didn't have time to take much pictures, though, but here's a shot of  the decoration of our stall. This is my last post on knitted Christmas balls, now it's time to move on :-)

De kerstmarkt in de Lebuinus Kerk was prachtig: mooi zonlicht, heerlijke geur van wafels, mooie muziek, prachtige kraampjes, en veel belangstelling voor ons “gebrei”. Het was echt leuk om hier deel van uit te maken! Dit is trouwens mijn laatste post over gebreide kerstballen, nu is het weer tijd voor iets anders :-).

Workshop kerstballen breien @ Lebuinuskerk Deventer

Two aran knit balls

It's cold, it's dark and I'm photo-shopping like crazy to make my pictures look winter white, instead of swampy gray :-). I've put a jug of magnolia branches on our mantle piece and added some of my aran knitted Christmas balls. Next week, we'll buy a tree!

Het is koud en donker en ik moet behoorlijk wat fotoshoppen om een lichte foto te krijgen :-). Hier heb ik twee gebreide kerstballen met kabelpatroon in magnoliatakken gehangen. Je kunt het patroon hier downloaden.

Two birds

The Christmas book from Arne & Carlos has 55 designs, but I limited myself to the ones with hearts and birds. I think the birds are really sweet!

Now that I've finished the yarn I bought for these Christmas balls, I'm going to use the little balls of white left-over yarn I found in my stash, and then I think it's time to start working on my throw again :-)

And, they've designed an extra advent Christmas ball, downloadable for free here. It's in Norse, but don't let that scare you, because the basic pattern is the same as the one in their book.

Knitted leaf & lace throw: a '70s interpretation

So far, I've finished 5 leaf & lace squares, only four more to go :-) It was nice to find a seventies example of this throw in the thrift store last week! I didn't like the colors (orange and brown), but I do like the way the design was adapted, such as knitting the leafs and the border in two different colors. I think this would work for e.g. a cushion cover knitted in thick yarn. The squares are stitched together diagonally. This surprised me, because it makes finishing the border quite difficult. She (I assume it was knitted by a woman :-), used half a square to fill the gaps in the border. Now that I'm writing this, I wonder how she did that... I forgot to take a look...

I took picture of the throw, but I didn't buy it because of the colors. I really hope it will find a happy new home!

Inmiddels heb ik vijf gebreide blokken :-) Vorige week vond ik een jaren-70 versie van dezelfde sprei in de kringloop. Ik heb hem niet gekocht (want bruin + oranje), maar ik vond dat er wel leuke details in zaten, zoals het gebruik van twee kleuren en de manier waarop de blokken aan elkaar genaaid zijn.
